Secret coupes and cabriolets of 2006 - What coupes do newcomers have to beat?

30 December 2005
Mazda RX-8
With its sports car looks and rear-hinged doors, the RX-8 is an intoxicating blend of style and practicality. It drives brilliantly, too, while the unique rotary engine provides an addictive howl and exhilarating performance. Space for four, a high-quality interior and keen pricing clinch the deal.

Nissan 350Z
Nissan’s 350Z is a coupe of the old school. A hearty 3.5-litre V6 engine provides bruising performance, while the grippy rear-wheel-drive chassis and meaty steering deliver a thrilling drive. The two-seater layout isn’t practical, but the 350Z is cheap, well built and guaranteed to put a smile on your face.

Audi TT
It’s a familiar sight now, but the iconic Audi TT still looks great. It’s affordable, too, while the interior remains a paragon of style and quality. The lacklustre drive betrays the TT’s aged origins, but it remains hugely desirable.
