Secret executive cars of 2006 - The cars the newcomers have to beat

29 December 2005
BMW 5 Series
The superb-handling 5 Series is still the one to beat in this class, having set the benchmark for driving pleasure. Punchy engines give the 5 its sporting edge and it's also spacious and comfortable. The iDrive control system doesn't appeal to everyone, though.

Jaguar S-type
Smooth engines and a supple ride make the S-type a fine alternative to German opposition. The beautifully refined diesel is our favourite, offering ample mid-range pulling power. Rear headroom and boot space could be better, but otherwise this is a strong contender.

Mercedes
Everything you'd expect from Mercedes: excellent drive, refinement and quality, plus a fine range of engines. It is not as exciting to drive as a 5 Series, though, and there are some question marks over quality.
