Secret hot hatches of 2006 - What do they have to beat?

30 December 2005
Skoda Octavia vRS
It might not look as dashing as the VW Golf GTI it's based on, but the Octavia vRS is just as enjoyable to drive and a great deal cheaper. The Skoda is bigger, too, making it a more practical proposition.

VW Golf GTI
Fantastically nimble and brilliant fun to drive, the latest Golf hot hatch is a fabulous car that has revived Volkswagen's GTI brand. It might cost a fair bit more than its brother the Octavia, but it's likely to hang on to more of its original value.

Vauxhall Astra VXR
With its brash looks, 237bhp turbocharged engine and stunning performance, the VXR is clearly no ordinary Vauxhall. What's more, it delivers a thrilling drive and surprisingly supple ride. The main downside is a cramped cabin.
