Audi A4 Cabriolet 70%The A4 Cabriolet missed out on a 90% score by just five seconds. That’s how much longer the door locks would need to have held out to reach the Home Office minimum standard of two minutes.
Stereo is a unique-fit item, but can be used in other A4 Cabriolets if stolen, so it drops five marks, the lack of window etching drops another five.
BMW 3-series Coupe 70%Every 3-series Coupe comes fitted with deadlocks, but they weren’t enough to stop our testers getting into the cabin in 22 seconds.
Apart from this, the BMW scores respectably, but like the A4 Cabriolet loses out on marks by not offering etched windows or a fully integrated stereo.
Ford Streetka 65% We were able to overcome the Streetka’s door locks in 40 seconds. To make matters worse, the car does without deadlocks that are standard on many other Fords. Etched windows would be a simple improvement. It’s not all bad news, though a visible VIN, lots of marked parts and locking wheelnuts as standard.
Mercedes CLK 65%Our testers defeated the Mercedes locking system in just one minute 15 seconds.
Otherwise, the CLK picks up a respectable score. There’s a visible VIN to help the police confirm the car’s identity, and marked parts to make stolen items traceable. The boot is secure, but there are no etched windows.
VW Beetle Cabriolet 95%This is the first year the Beetle Cabriolet has been included in our Security Supertest and it has certainly hit the ground running with a near-perfect score.
The Beetle proved to be the only model in this class to keep our testers out of the cabin for at least two minutes, and only dropped points because its windows are not etched.
