Security Supertest 2003 - Family Cars & Compact Executives

04 November 2003
Ford Mondeo 70%

Back in 2001, the Mondeo was the most secure car in this class, but this time around its locks succumbed to attack in one minute and 11 seconds.
Nevertheless, the Ford manages to claw back an extra 5% over last year’s score by adding standard etched windows to a decent list of features.

Honda Accord 70%

As with most of the cars in this class, our testers broke into the Accord within the two-minute limit.
The Honda scores top marks in most sections, including for its boot, which is secure once thieves are in the cabin. It scores five out of 10 for its unique-fit stereo, but loses points because etched windows are not standard.

Lexus IS300 80%

Lexus stormed ahead last year with three impressive 100% scores.
It hasn’t done quite so well this year, our testers gaining entry in one minute 51 seconds.
That said, the IS300 still impresses, with a fully integrated stereo, deadlocks as standard, window etching and lockable wheelnuts, plus a visible VIN. Laminated glass fitted to the range-topping Lexus LS430 still isn’t available as an option, although this does not affect the score.

Mazda 6 70%

Our testers were able to gain entry to the Mazda after only 54 seconds, so nil points are scored for this test.
On the plus side, the locking wheelnuts, etched windows and deadlocks do help the cause. A unique-fit stereo can only be used in another Mazda 6. As is usual with hatchbacks, thieves can access the load area if they get into the cabin.

Saab 9-3 100%

The 9-3 is the only car in this group to pass the entry test, but the security-conscious Saab doesn’t stop there on its march to a perfect score.
It’s full marks across the board from a unique-fit stereo and deadlocks to locking wheelnuts and etched windows. The car’ boot is also secure if thieves do manage to get inside the cabin.

Toyota Avensis 80%

If the Toyota’s door locks hadn’t given up the ghost after one minute and two seconds, we would be looking at an unblemished score sheet for the Avensis.
It has all the security features we’ve come to expect of a modern saloon, such as a fully integrated stereo that’s part of the dash, an alarm, and 22 marked parts.

Vauxhall Vectra 70%

The Vectra missed out on passing the entry test by just nine seconds.
The stereo can only be used in other Vectras, but a lack of standard etched windows loses the Vauxhall valuable points.
On the plus side, the Vectra scores full marks for having 25 marked parts – 15 more than the recommended minimum.
