Security Supertest 2003 - How the tests were done

04 November 2003
The potential maximum score of 100 breaks down as follows:

Entry tests 20 points

Door locks should keep thieves out for at least two minutes. Success means a score of 20 points. If a car fails, no points are scored.

Driveaway test 25 points

Home Office guidelines allow five minutes for the immobiliser to be overcome. If it holds out against our testers, 25 points are scored. If the car is driven away, no points are scored and we record how quickly the car can be taken.

Deadlocks test 5 points

Deadlocks prevent a criminal from opening the doors of a car by smashing the window and unlocking it from the inside. So if they’re fitted, five points are scored.

Visible VIN 10 points

A visible Vehicle Identification Number (VIN) on a secure plate at the bottom of the windscreen earns 10 points. These plates make it easier for the police to discover a stolen car’ true identity.

Marked parts 10 points

Parts marked with an identifying number such as the VIN can help the police identify stolen components. Plus, marked parts make it tougher for thieves to give a complete car a new identity.

Stereo security 10 points

If a stereo is unique-fit (that is, can only be used in this model) or has a removeable panel, it scores five points. A stereo which is fully integrated and so entirely useless if removed scores 10 points.

Etched windows 5 points

Etching windows with the car’ registration number makes changing its identity tougher, and so acts as a deterrent to thieves. Five points are awarded.

Secure boot 5 points

We lock a lap-top in the boot and assume a window has been broken. If a thief can remove it, thanks to a ski-flap, a folding seat or internal release, no points are scored.

Locking wheelnuts 5 points

If locking wheelnuts are fitted to prevent thieves stealing wheels, five points are scored.

Secure spare wheel 5 points

If the spare wheel is stored securely or is completely hidden, five points are awarded.

Laminated glass No points

We believe the extra strength of laminated glass could dramatically cut opportunist car crime. There’s no set standard for laminated glazing, so no points are awarded, but we do note if it’s standard fit or how much it costs as an option.

Self locking doors No points

It’s all too easy to leave a car unlocked by mistake. This year our testers noted if an unattended car would eventually lock itself.

Alarm No points

We question the effectiveness of an alarm, but record if one is fitted and how much it costs.
