Mazda CX-5 review

I borrowed Iain's long-termer for a weekend away to see my parents in North Wales, accompanied by my heavily pregnant sister and 18-month-old daughter. We hit the M25 for our 200 mile journey at 4pm on a Friday, possibly the absolute worst way to start our trip. We had to contend with traffic jams, rain and a bored, hungry toddler.

We finally arrived in North Wales at 10pm after what can only be described as a journey from hell. However, despite all of this, I felt okay, more than okay in fact. The CX-5 was remarkably easy to drive and could well be the only car ever to not give me backache after more than a couple of hours in the driving seat.

I've spent a lot of time in a 2.0-litre petrol CX-5 test car this week. We are putting it through our True MPG test, so I'll post a review of the car once the results are in, but what I can say is that while the stats of the petrol version are impressive – 47.1mpg and 139g/km CO2 – I missed the mid-range power that's an inherent characteristic of a diesel engine. Accelerating from 30-60 mph in our long-term diesel CX-5 is brisk and effortless, but you need more revs to do this in the petrol version.

The petrol-engined CX-5 is good, but I'm glad we picked the four-cylinder diesel.

I booked the CX-5 into a local Mazda dealership earlier this week. There was an annoying creak coming from near the windscreen on the driver's side.

Typically, in the time between booking the car in and the actual checks, the creak seemed to go away, but (un)fortunately another creak, this time from the rear seats on the near side.

Anyway, the dealership, MKG3000, collected the car from work, and delivered it back later in the day and, so far, all is as it should be in the cabin.

When I walked up to the CX-5 for the first time, I was blown away by its sheer size. I was a bit concerned as my week with the car was going to be spent whizzing around the B-roads of East Sussex on a week's holiday in Camber.

Once I got behind the wheel though, the Mazda's cabin felt a bit like a reverse-Tardis. Everything shrank around me and the car switched from the beast I thought it was going to be, to a fun, snug drive that zipped around the country and city streets with ease.

The boot was monstrous, which was fantastic for our trip away. Essentially, it meant we could take half our house, throw it in the boot and not worry about the precise packing that has blighted many a family holiday.
