Ford Focus review

The 1.0-litre engine in our Focus Ecoboost hasn't quite lived up to its economical expectations. Our True MPG results of 38.2 are way off the Government's 56.5mpg figure, so it's not surprising that most of us in the office are a little disappointed by it.

With 3500 miles now on the clock, a 70-mile slog around the M25 seemed an ideal opportunity to test it on an economy run.

By deploying the 'Twizy Tactics' I used to cross London a couple of weeks ago (gentle acceleration, no hard braking and sticking below the speed limits), I was able to squeeze 52.0mpg out of it, according to the trip computer.

Unfortunately, even the slightest incline on any stretch of the motorway caused a drop back to the high 40s, so it looked unlikely that I would ever match the official figure.

I'd be interested to know what sort of economy figure other Focus owners with this engine have been getting.

The Focus isn't the most practical small family car, but it can still carry fairly long loads.

I needed to move a wooden sideboard top, and wasn't sure if it would fit in the back of the Focus.

I needn't have worried. All I had to do was fold down one part of the split rear seats and the sideboard top fitted a treat. The flat, decently low boot lip made it easy to load, too.

I hate to be pessimistic, but I just cannot bond with our Focus.

I love the way it drives and the handling is absolutely superb, but every time I drive one, I walk away thinking 'I just couldn’t own one'. Why? There are too many irritations.

Several months ago, I complained about our old 1.6 Ecoboost model's steering wheel contours and buttons, fussy dashboard and complicated DAB radio. Last week I hopped into our new 1.0 Ecoboost with a clear mind, and found myself annoyed by the same problems.

There were a number of new niggles I picked up on, too, such as the windscreen wipers, which don't clear enough of the windscreen. When it’s cold and condensation has settled, the wipers don't quite clear the edges, so you're faced with even larger A-pillar blind spots until the heater has cleared it.

Trivial, yes, but annoying - especially on a 6am commute.

The Focus has been put through one of its stiffest tests so far – the trip to the garden centre.

The rose bush looked pretty small, but it was too tall to fit into the Focus's boot with the parcel shelf in place. Still, once I'd removed the shelf and put it diagonally across the boot floor, it acted as a handy brace to stop the greenery and its box sliding around.

Thanks to the Ford's beautifully controlled suspension, things weren't shaken up on the journey home, so the rose bush emerged unscathed.
