Shanghai motor show 2011 - Kia Rio K2

Kia has revealed its new K2 saloon at the Shanghai motor show, showing the manufacturer’s ambition to be a leading brand in the expanding Chinese market.

The K2 is based on the same platform as the new Kia Rio, but has been modified to fit the demands of Chinese consumers. Kia has said that the K2 will be seen as a premium small car, and draws styling hints from the K5 saloon (known as the Optima elsewhere), and getting high levels of quality.

Announcing plans for the K2 at the Shanghai show serves to highlight Kia’ commitment to its localised growth strategy, with the popular Cee’d model range and Venga mini-MPV good examples of its strategy so far – both were engineered and designed specifically for the European market.

The K2 will be available in six trims in China, along with a choice of 1.4- and 1.6-litre petrol engines. Production of the four-door saloon model is due to start in June, while the five-door hatchback version will be built from August.
