China has become the global hot spot for sales of luxury saloons, so it was no surprise to see a highly visible presence of prestige brands at the Shanghai motor show.

Mercedes-Benz and BMW led the way with updated or additional versions of the S-Class and 7 Series.

They were also trying their best to divert attention away from the Porsche Panamera, an all-new rival for their traditional luxury market customers.

Even Jaguar got in on the act with a 20-second taster video for next year's new XJ.
