Two questions spring to mind upon encountering the Skoda Yeti in the Geneva showhalls:

1) What is the Skoda Yeti?

2) Will anyone ever be able to write or talk about the Skoda Yeti without making some awful Abominable Snowman joke?

We can answer the first one fairly easily, because the Skoda Yeti is a 4.2 metre long, five-door, high-riding hatchback that will go on sale late this year, and challenge the Nissan Qashqai and Fiat Sedici for sales.

Five engines will be offered from launch: two petrols and three diesels.

The entry-level unit is a turbocharged 103bhp 1.2-litre that's available with front-wheel drive only.

The four-wheel-drive petrol model uses a 158bhp 1.8-litre turbocharged petrol engine.

The three 2.0-litre diesels are a 109bhp unit available with two-wheel drive only, and 138bhp and 168bhp units that come with four-wheel-drive.

The Yeti has 1760 litres of boot space with its rear seats folded down, and features a luggage cover and a cargo net.

The Yeti is due to go on sale in the UK in September. No prices or trim levels have been released yet.

Skoda Octavia Greenline
Skoda is also showing off the Octavia Greenline in Geneva.

Powered by a 105bhp 1.6-litre diesel engine with 184lb ft of pulling power, it will average 64.2mpg and have CO2 emissions of just 116g/km.

It will go on sale later this year, although prices have yet to be announced.
