Smart will put the lowest-emitting production car in the world on sale in the UK next February.
The right-hand-drive Smart Fortwo will average 86mpg and emit just 88g/km of carbon dioxide. It is powered by a 44bhp 799cc diesel engine.
The VW Polo Bluemotion and Seat Ibiza Ecomotive are Britain's current lowest-emitting production cars, achieving 74.3mpg and putting out 99g/km of CO2.
The Smart Fortwo CDI had originally only been intended for mainland Europe, but has been approved as a right-hand-drive model in the wake of rising fuel prices.
