Special RX-8 celebrates rotary 40th

04 December 2007

To celebrate 40 years since the launch of its first rotary-engined car, Mazda has launched a special edition of its current rotary-powered car, the RX-8.

Only 400 examples of the RX-8 40th Anniversary Limited Edition will be made, each costing £24,595. The cars are in showrooms now.

The car's exterior gets a sportier look, with bespoke 10-spoke, 18-inch alloy wheels, front foglamps and a more aerodynamic rear wing, as well as a 40th anniversary badge on each front wing.

There is also substance to the sporty style, says Mazda, because it has added uprated dampers for keener handling. Foam-filled front suspension crossmembers also make the car more refined.

Changes to the interior also mark out the Limited Edition from other RX-8s. The seats are trimmed in black leather with stone-coloured alcantara centre sections, and the steering wheel, handbrake and gearlever are trimmed to match (black leather with stone stitching).

Carpet mats with the Limited Edition logo, as well as stainless steel door scuff plates bearing the car's number (001-400) complete the car's identity.

Other standard equipment includes xenon headlights, aluminium pedals, climate control, heated front seats and a Bose sound system.

• The first Mazda with a rotary engine was the Cosmo Sport, which went on sale in May 1967.
