New rules affecting where the revenue earned by speed cameras are now in force, and there are also changes to the way in which speed cameras can be sited.
The local authorities that place the cameras will no longer administer all monies raised by them. Instead, fines will be centrally controlled and local authorities will receive money from a fund of £110m. They can then use this money for road safety measures, including road engineering and cameras.
Rules over the siting of cameras have also changed. The rule stating that at least four people have to be killed or seriously injured on a specific stretch of road over a period of three years before a speed camera can be installed has been relaxed.
Now, a greater range of crashes can be examined over five years, which should give a more accurate picture of risk.
