Subaru Forester prices announced

The Subaru Forester will cost from 24,995 when it goes on sale in May.

Subaru will offer three engines in the new Forester one diesel and two petrols with the 24,995 entry-level car getting the 148bhp 2.0-litre diesel engine that features on the outgoing Forester.

The other engines are a 148bhp 2.0-litre petrol carried over from the current car and an all-new 237bhp 2.0-litre direct-injection turbocharged petrol.

Entry-level petrol cars come in XE and XE Premium trim, with either a manual transmission or automatic CVT gearbox. Prices start at 25,495 and go up to 28,995.

The new turbocharged petrol engine is available only in top-of-the-range XT trim and with the automatic gearbox. It costs 30,995.

All three engines come with Subaru's four-wheel-drive system, and the company claims fuel economy and CO2 figures will improve over those of the current car. However, official figures will not be available until April 15. The diesel will drop at least one tax band, said a Subaru spokesman.

Subaru claims that all versions will offer improved levels of equipment.

The Forester is available to order now and the first cars will be delivered in early May.
