Subaru is showing off its new Forester here in Geneva. It's the car's European debut, after being revealed at the Detroit motor show in January

The car on show in Geneva is petrol powered, but if Subaru really wants the Forester to take on the likes of Honda's CR-V and Toyota's Rav4 in the UK diesel power is a must.

Subaru's first ever diesel engine, a 2.0-litre Boxer unit, is also here in Geneva in the company's Legecy compact executive car.

The Forester will get the diesel engine, but not until September.

If you fancy the five-door Impreza with diesel power you will have to wait until the end of the year.

Initially, the diesel Impreza will have a similar power output to the Legacy.

However Subaru insiders say there is more power to come from the diesel engine, but how this will be badged in an Impreza remains to be seen. Don't bet your mortgage on a diesel-powered Impreza STI (or SDI) however.
