Subaru's first diesel-powered cars will go on sale from February.
The Subaru Legacy Sports Tourer and Outback estates will be available with a 147bhp 2.0-litre turbodiesel engine and cost from £19,995.
In the Legacy Sports Tourer, the engine gives the car a 126mph top speed and a 0-60mph time of 8.5sec. In addition, it will return 49.6mpg and emit 151g/km of carbon dioxide.
The Legacy Outback has a top speed of 124mph and a 0-60mph time of 8.8sec. It records 48.7mpg and emits 153g/km.
The cars' gearbox and air-conditioning systems have been modified to accommodate the diesel's greater pulling power, while diesel models will be recognisable by a small air-intake in the bonnet.
Saloon models will be offered with the engine later this year.
