Subaru has some interesting engine developments to shout about at the Paris Motor Show later this month.

The first development, called SI Drive, is a new feature for the Legacy which changes engine settings to provide three sets of responses and characteristics. Owners will be able to select an economy mode, sports mode or a 'super sport' setting.

The other face-lift changes to the Legacy are subtle, with some adjustment to the interior. Sales kick off in the UK this October.

Subaru has also developed a more economical entry-level 1.5-litre petrol engine for the Impreza. The car retains four-wheel drive as well as the boxer engine layout for which Subaru is known. This configuration lays the cylinders flat in a horizontally-opposed arrangement.

The company says the 1.5-engined car will be available for Focus money, so with the cheapest 2.0-litre Impreza currently priced at £16,225, it could create a new entry point of about £12,000 to £13,000 for the Subaru.

The Tribeca will also make its first appearance in European format, with sales finally kicking off this November. The X5 rival has been trailed at various shows since Geneva last year, and will cost from £29,000. Five- and seven-seat versions will be available.
