• B5-TPH concept features turbo hybrid and four-wheel drive
• Crossover styling, part estate, part 4x4
• Impreza turbo performance with 40mpg around town
Subaru will be showcasing its new hybrid technology at next month’s Tokyo Motor Show, under the skin of the B5-TPH concept car.
The hybrid combines an electric motor with Subaru’s established turbocharged 2.0-litre engine, which, in this form, produces 256bhp. The electric motor produces just 10bhp but is said to boost low-rev power, which enables the B5-TPH to post some impressive performance and economy claims.
The concept car is claimed to outperform an Impreza WRX (which gets from 0-60mph in under six seconds), while achieving an outstanding 40mpg in city driving conditions.
Subaru is keeping up with the current trend in concept cars by referring to the B5-TPH as a 'crossover vehicle' which features the benefits of a conventional estate and a proper 4x4.
The three-door features Subaru’s new nose treatment, similar to the latest Impreza, and an enormous tailgate allowing a pick-up-sized entrance to the load bay.
Although the B5-TPH is unlikely to make it into production in its concept car form, expect the hybrid technology to make it into Subarus in about three years' time – possibly even leapfrogging the arrival of diesel Subarus.
