Subaru XV

• World debut for new European-spec XV
• Nissan Qashqai rival on sale in 2012
• Choice of petrol and diesel Boxer engines

Subaru showed off its new XV at Frankfurt. The Nissan Qashqai rival is expected to go on sale in the UK early next year.

Taking its cues from the concept that was unveiled at the Shanghai motor show in April, the four-wheel drive, five-seat XV features a hexagonal grille, 'hawk eye' headlights and SUV-style high body and side cladding.

Inside, Subaru says the cabin is roomy, with plenty of stowage and a multi-function display in the upper middle section of the dashboard.

Buyers will have a choice of new 1.6- and 2.0-litre horizontally opposed 'Boxer' petrol engines, as well as the existing 2.0-litre diesel unit.

All petrol-engined models will come with a stop-start system to improve fuel economy, while a CVT gearbox will be available as an option and the standard safety kit will include a drivers knee airbag and Vehicle Dynamics Control.

Subaru is yet to reveal prices for the car, but the company's British importer, IM Group, told us recently: 'We want to sell the XV for the same price as the Qashqai. If we are 2000 more expensive then it will be very difficult. If we are competitive on price and get customers into the car, then we're sure they will be convinced.'
