The new Vauxhall VXR8 GTS gets a significant boost in power over the outgoing car, but increases its price by just £5000.

It comes with rear-wheel-drive transmission and a supercharged 6.2-litre V8 engine that produces 576bhp of power – 150bhp more than the previous car's 425bhp.

Vauxhall is yet to confirm performance figures, but says that it expects it to be quicker from 0-62mph than the outgoing car's 4.9 seconds, and have the same 155mph limited top speed.

The engine is the same as the one in the recently launched Chevrolet Camaro ZL1, and is paired with either a six-speed manual transmission or an optional six-speed auto gearbox.

To cope with the extra power, the GTS gets a new torque vectoring system that helps reduce understeer by applying the brakes to the inside rear wheel and power to the outside wheel under hard acceleration.

There are three suspension settings – Touring, Sport and Track – while the Driver Preference Dial adjusts settings to one of four modes: Touring, Sport, Performance and Track. This alters the settings on the stability control, traction control, launch control (manual transmission only), and the exhaust, as well as the torque vectoring and the power steering.

The GTS gets an all-new front end with a large air intake, daylight running lights, 20-inch alloys, chrome tailpipes, a body-coloured rear spoiler and LED tail-lights.

Inside, it gets an upgraded instrument panel with suede inserts and heated electric leather VXR Performance seats.

It also gets a head-up display, forward collision warning and a lane-departure warning system.

While the GTS engine is available only in the saloon VXR8 at the moment, it is likely that a Tourer version will be offered in the future, as is the case with the standard VXR8.

Order books are open now for the new VXR8 GTS, but customers are unlikely to get their cars before December. More information on emissions, economy and performance should be released in July.
