Scrappage special - Buyer's guide - SUVs
Target Price £17,785
Volkswagen's first mid-size SUV ticks all the right boxes.
It's good to drive and VW's latest diesel technology keeps the engine refined and powerful. The finish and build quality are as good as you'd expect, while even this entry-level model comes well equipped with alloys, air-con, electronic stability control and electric windows.
The Tiguan is safe as well as sound, thanks to its side and curtain airbags and a five-star crash rating. Inside, four adults can sit in comfort, while boot space is acceptable. Running costs should prove reasonable and future values should stay a step ahead of similar-sized rivals.
Suzuki SX4 1.6 DDiS 2wd
Target Price £11,253
If you don't consider the SX4 a serious SUV, please think again. Compact, good to drive and well equipped – what's not to like?
Essentials such as air-con, a CD player and electric windows are all included and there's room enough for four adults inside.
The 1.6-litre diesel will cut your fuel bills, while low road tax and insurance are unlikely to cause headaches. This version has the best resale value of the whole range.
