It was an emergency Budget that had been designed to tackle the country's huge deficit and, according to Mr Osborne, was fair and progressive.

The planned increase in VAT to 20% will hit motorists hard - both at the pumps and in the showrooms - but there was no new fuel duty increase.

However, we expect that the previous fuel duty increases, announced by former Chancellor Alistair Darling, will still go ahead.
