The Police go electric

29 July 2008

With a top speed of 28mph it's unlikely to out run a bicycle, let alone a determined criminal on the run, yet this electric car could be the future of policing in the UK.

The Global Electric Motorcar (GEM) is on trial with Sussex Police, its appeal lying in the fact that it can do 50 miles without being charged and manage the equivalent of 450mpg.

However, before you start buying new window locks and a burglar alarm, rest assured the vehicle is likely to only find service transporting Community Support Officers around on routine patrols.

Made by Chrysler, the Gem is already being used by police in New York, Miami and Los Angeles.
