The rescue package - is it enough? - Introduction

Introduction
Earlier this week, Business Secretary Lord Mandelson announced a £2.3 billion rescue package for the British car industry.

Following the announcement, however, he found himself facing criticism from all sides of the political, industrial and environmental arena.

Some said the car industry shouldn't receive special treatment at a time when all businesses are struggling, while others argued that the money was insufficient to help buoy struggling car companies, or stimulate new car sales.

In short, few people were happy with the package - some saying it went too far and some that it didn't go nearly far enough.

It is against this backdrop of reaction that the package must be judged: Mandelson knows he is a man walking a precarious tightrope as he tries to appease the many and varied viewpoints.

So what does the rescue package actually offer, and will it be enough to save the ailing motor industry?
