The Ford Fiesta was the most popular car in the UK in October, with sales of more than 8000 vehicles. Overall, there were 151,252 new registrations, which is more than 12% up on the same period last year.
The Vauxhall Corsa and Ford Focus took second and third place respectively.
However, popularity alone doesn’t make a great car, and we'd always recommend doing research and taking several test drives before opting to buy.
Here's our What Car? verdict on the top 10 models for October.
1. Ford Fiesta – 8058 sales
The Fiesta is great fun to drive, and offers a range of fine engines. There aren’t many downsides, but some of the Fiesta’s rivals offer more space and extra versatility.

2. Vauxhall Corsa – 6285 sales
The Vauxhall Corsa is comfortable and quiet at speed, but it is important to pick the right engine – the small petrols aren't great at hauling the car’ weight. Running and buying costs are affordable, but resale values fall flat compared with some rivals'.

3. Ford Focus – 5834 sales
Like the Fiesta, the Focus is the sweetest-handling car in its class. It’s also well equipped and competitively priced. The interior is not at the same high standard as some of its rivals', though, especially on the basic trims.

4. Vauxhall Astra – 5754 sales
The Astra's sharp looks, great quality, smooth ride, good refinement, and secure handling all count in its favour, but it's also comparatively expensive to buy and lease. It doesn’t hold its value that well, either.

5.Volkswagen Golf – 4158 sales
Most Golfs sold this month will have been the Mk6, but expect the hatchback’s popularity to continue or increase with the all-new Mk7 that's on sale now. The styling might be conservative, but it is fantastically refined, well built, practical, and holds its value impressively well.

6. BMW 3 Series – 3762 sales
The BMW 3 Series is the best car in its class, just as long as you pick the right options. The optional suspension system makes it a car that handles and rides superbly, while it is also luxurious and spacious inside.

7. Nissan Qashqai – 3567 sales
The Qashqai’s 4x4 styling, roomy boot, and impressive comfort have made it a popular family car. Standard equipment is also good.

The new BMW 1 Series has proved a hit with buyers, and the new three-door model will help maintain its popularity. It offers a strong combination of performance, economy and emissions across all engines – it handles well, too.

The Mini hatchback has remained largely unchanged for a fair while now, but this hasn’t deterred buyers. They're drawn to its stylish looks and entertaining driving experience, while overlooking its cramped interior. The fact that it holds its value so well is a real bonus.

The VW Polo is not the most fun car to drive of all those in the top 10, but it is comfortable and well priced. Steer clear of the entry-level petrol models and you'll find it's a classy supermini.
