Tokyo motor show highlights - Audi A1 Sportback

30 November 2011
Audi left the real glamour to VW at Tokyo, with a public unveiling of a car we’d already seen - the A1 Sportback - and little else.

However, the firm has high hopes for the five-door version of the A1 - particularly in Japan, where the three-door already makes up almost 20% of the brand’s sales in the country.

The Sportback is the same size as the three-door, but Audi claims that packaging tweaks have freed up a little more room inside, particularly in the rear. There’s around 1cm more headroom in there.

The Sportback is already on sale in the UK, in fact; dealers will take orders, although deliveries won’t start until the spring. Prices start at £13,980, around £560 more than the entry-level three-door.

It’s a neat, entirely logical extension of the A1 that is bound to build on the current model’s success.
