Tokyo motor show highlights - Subaru Advanced Tourer Concept

30 November 2011
Subaru’s concept car is a handsome, edgy estate that showcases two important points: it gives us an indication of how the next Legacy might look, and shows that Subaru is serious about improving fuel economy and CO2 emissions through downsizing.

The Advanced Tourer Concept is not a small car - it’s over 4.5m long, in fact - but the combustion engine at its heart is only a 1.6-litre ‘boxer’ motor.

It’s turbocharged - and mated to an electric motor - to give performance, Subaru claims, on a par with the Legacy’s 2.5-litre boxer engine. It’s four-wheel drive, of course, and has a CVT gearbox.

The ATC was another strong point in a good show for Subaru, but now the firm needs to carry off the production version successfully. We were all impressed with the last concept, the Impreza, but less convinced by the real thing.
