The second instalment in Suzuki's planned three-model assault on the family car class is the one rational offering on the company's Tokyo show stand.
At last month's Frankfurt motor show, Suzuki revealed the Kizashi – a saloon concept car that has the Mazda 6 as its main sales target.
The Kizashi 2 is the five-door hatchback version of the same car, although it is officially billed as a 'crossover sports wagon'.
In time, an estate concept car will also be revealed.
The show cars are bigger than the real offerings, due to start rolling off the production lines in late 2009, but there is no question that all three bodystyles are going to be built.
The front-wheel-drive saloon will be with us first, followed by the estate in mid-2010. The hatch, which will have permanent four-wheel drive, will arrive in 2011.
Power for the UK models is likely to come from a Fiat-sourced 2.2-litre diesel, which Suzuki will build under licence in India, a 2.9-litre V6 diesel that Suzuki has designed itself, and the 2.4-litre petrol engine from the Grand Vitara. There's also a new 3.7-litre Suzuki V6 petrol engine for some markets, but it is unlikely to be offered in the UK due to its high company car tax rates.
Suzuki is planning a small, high-spec range, with up to 12 airbags as standard. It is also expecting a full house of Euro NCAP crash-test stars – five out of five for frontal impact adult protection and four out of four for both child-occupant and pedestrian safety.
