You can now order a factory-built Caterham Seven 160 for £17,995. With a kerbweight of just 490kg, it promises to offer huge dollops of fun, despite having an engine that generates only 80bhp.

If you're not keen on parting with your hard-earned cash for something without doors, but are still looking for a two-seater convertible that's fun to drive, here are our top recommendations:

Audi TT Roadster

The 2.0 TFSI is our favourite version of Audi's stylish convertible. It provides the best mix of performance, thrills and economy and sounds great. All models are generously equipped and reliability is one of the TT's strong suits.

Lotus Elise

The Elise and the Seven both offer huge driving thrills without many creature comforts. Lotus is a bit more generous than Caterham in that it offers a roof and doors as standard, but otherwise things are pretty basic. If you can live with that, the Elise offers huge enjoyment for relatively little money.

Mazda MX-5

A list of two-seater convertibles wouldn't be complete without the MX-5. Little else offers the same level of fun at a low price. Our budget of £18,000 will get you a nearly-new 2.0-litre model with all the toys.

Mercedes-Benz SLK

What Car? readers are big fans of the SLK - it's consistently one of the most searched-for convertibles on the website. It's not hard to see why; the SLK is practical, refined and fun to drive, and the folding metal roof makes it usable whatever the weather.

Porsche Boxster

A second-generation Porsche Boxster with relatively low mileage can be yours for £18,000. It's a reliable and fun two-seater convertible that is the benchmark for the competition. It's also surprisingly practical and easy to drive in town, meaning you can use it every day.
