UK new car sales fall 24%

07 May 2009

Car sales in the UK fell by 24% in April, compared with the same period last year.

The number of new car registrations for April was 133,475, according to the Society of Motor Manufacturers and Traders (SMMT).

The fall marks the eleventh consecutive fall in sales. Overall sales for 2009 have dipped by 28.5% in the first third of the year.

Demand for diesel vehicles fell for the second time this year, but sales of small cars continued to grow.

Industry figures believe that April's figures could be artificially low, because consumers put off purchasing new cars in anticipation of the Government's scrappage scheme, which comes into effect on May 18.

The scrappage scheme offers owners a £2000 incentive to trade in cars over 10 years old for a new one.

The best selling cars in April were...

1. Ford Focus
2. Ford Fiesta
3. Vauxhall Corsa
4. Volkswagen Golf
5. Vauxhall Astra
6. Vauxhall Insignia
7. Peugeot 207
8. Audi A3
9. Ford Mondeo
10. Vauxhall Zafira
