Volkswagen's updated Golf Plus is now on sale, with styling tweaks, improved engines and more equipment as standard.

Changes to the exterior are limited to new bumpers and headlights and a fresh front grille, but together they give a sharper look that's similar to the new Golf. Updated controls and materials provide the cabin with a similarly subtle update.

The simplified range means that there are now three engines and two trim levels to choose from. As before, the entry-level petrol engine is a 79bhp 1.4, but the 120bhp turbocharged 1.4 is a better bet.

The latest 2.0-litre common-rail tubodiesels replace the older 1.9 and 2.0-litre diesels found in the previous model. Both are significantly cleaner and more fuel efficient.

Entry-level S trim includes air-conditioning, a CD player, six airbags and stability control. Extras on SE models include cruise control, alloy wheels and a front centre armrest, but the most interesting addition is VW's Park Assist system, which automatically steers the car into a parking space.

Prices have gone up and now start at £14,410. The premium over the equivalent Golf five-door is between £245 and £1345.
