Since its launch back in 1999, the Audi TT has been an icon of design. The latest generation not only looks great, it also handles well, it’s quick and it’s reasonably cheap to run. That’s why it wins this year’s fun car category.
The majority of the car’ chassis and bodywork is aluminium, making it lighter than the old model, yet it’s bigger and has slightly more room inside.
Go for the 2.0-litre 197bhp TFSI version. It feels more alert than the heavier V6, and sounds great under hard acceleration. The TT is also light, nimble and grippy, so it’s fast in a straight line and round the bends.
All models are well equipped, with climate control, alloy wheels, stability control, curtain airbags and half-leather sports seats as standard. Make sure you choose one with metallic paint if you want residual values to be good.
The 2.0-litre petrol is pretty cheap to run, returning an average of 36.7mpg and emitting 183g/km of CO2. The second-generation TT is proving durable, with few reliability problems, but make sure the one you’re buying has a full service history.
If owners have any complaints, it’s usually to do with worn leather seats and the odd rattle coming from the glovebox and dashboard, but these problems are generally few and far between.
Used prices are slightly higher than some rival coupés’, but the TT’s beautifully crafted interior and superior driving experience make it worth every extra penny.
