Used cars of the week: used rivals to the Mercedes-Benz GLA

The new Mercedes-Benz GLA goes on sale in the spring, with prices starting from around £25,000. It uses the same underpinnings as the A-Class and is available with front- or four-wheel drive.

The new GLA will have to beat established rivals from Audi, BMW, Land Rover and even Mini.

Here's our pick of some of the best used rivals we've found in the What Car? Approved Used classifieds, which you can pick up from just £14,000:

Audi Q3

Audi's Q3 is a small SUV that offers great refinement and a classy interior. We found this nearly new 2.0 TDI SE with just 9000 miles on the clock on sale for £24,490. It's got a great specification including sat-nav, Bluetooth and alloy wheels. The 2.0-litre diesel is our pick of the range thanks to its low running costs.

BMW X1

The X1 isn't as practical as some small SUVs but it is cheap to run and refined, too. This 2011 xDrive18d SE model comes with four-wheel drive and has done 32,000 miles. It can be yours for a reasonable £14,990.

Land Rover Freelander

When it comes to off-road ability, rival small SUVs are outshone by the very capable Land Rover Freelander. We found this 2.2 TD4 GS in the classifieds. It's a 2010 car with just 16,000 miles on the clock and it's on the market at £17,891. For that you get leather seats, alloy wheels, air-conditioning and genuine go-anywhere capability.

Mini Countryman

The Countryman is Mini's first five-door car. It takes its styling cues from the retro hatchback and is available with five seats and four-wheel drive. This 2011 Cooper D has done 26,000 miles and comes with air-conditioning, alloy wheels and a contrasting black roof. It's yours for £13,987.
