Nissan has been a successful player in the supermini segment since the early '80s and with the all-new Micra released in 2010, its third-generation models (2002-2010) are fantastic value on the used market.
This previous-generation Micra was offered as a three- or five-door hatchback, available with either a 1.0-, 1.2-, 1.4- or 1.6-litre petrol engine. There were also two 1.5 dCi diesels, but these are less popular. An auto gearbox could be paired with the 1.2 and 1.4 petrols only.
The 64bhp 1.2 feels painfully slow and its fuel economy is barely any better than its 80bhp sibling. As a result, the 80bhp 1.2-litre petrol is our pick of the range, with its blend of decent performance and strong fuel economy. The 1.4 petrol is fractionally quicker, but it's also thirstier, while the 108bhp 1.6 petrol offers the best performance figures.
Of the two 1.5-litre diesels on offer, the 64bhp unit is efficient but sluggish, while the 81bhp engine offers better pace and is just as economical as its less powerful sibling.
All Micras are equipped with twin front airbags, anti-lock brakes, power steering, electric front windows, a CD player and remote locking. However, we’d go for SE spec with its standard air-conditioning.
Occupants in the front get plenty of legroom, while an excellent driving position can be obtained – despite the limited adjustment available.
Rear-seat passengers suffer because the sloping roofline cuts into headroom, while luggage space is also limited. However, the sliding rear bench lets you shift the balance between rear legroom and boot space.
Things to look out for include batteries going flat, immobiliser and software problems and keyless entry faults. Some diesels have been known to suffer serious turbo issues and rear hatches can leak.
