This is the Vauxhall Monza concept, revealed in a new set of pictures which previews the Frankfurt motor show car.
It's an electric car with a range-extender system, similar to the setup already seen in the Vauxhall Ampera and Chevrolet Volt. A 1.0-litre, three-cylinder turbocharged engine acts as a generator for the batteries, fuelled by Compressed Natural Gas (CNG) rather than petrol to reduce emissions.
The 4.69 metre-long four-seater coupe has two doors that operate using a pair of roof-mounted hinges, giving the car a large, gullwing-style opening.
The front grille mimics that of the new Insignia saloon, with a slimmer chrome bar and sculpted front air intakes on either side. A silver strake runs along the length of the wheelbase, rising up to edge the vents behind the front wheels, then kicking back sharply towards the cabin.
Big arches over the oversized back wheels support the Monza's wide, wraparound rear end; under the tailgate, there is 500 litres of boot space. Silver trim elements run the length of the coupe’s roof, and then merge into the slim LED lights at the rear.
Inside the cabin, a single LED projector-driven surface runs the width of the interior, and can display a range of fully customised information in 3D.
The centre console enables communication between passengers’ smartphones, so music, information and routes can be shared via the car’s system. New car-to-car connectivity options are also included, which will work with future autonomous driving programmes to improve safety.
General Motors Europe chairman, Karl-Thomas Neumann, has previously said the Monza ‘will have a long-term impact on the next generation of Vauxhall and Opel models’, which suggests its styling will influence the 'family look' across the range.
The company has not confirmed any production plans for the Monza, but What Car? understands from inside sources that a coupe version of the Cascada is on the way.
