The GTI isn’t going to be the only hot Golf. A slightly cheaper GTD model that uses a 168bhp 2.0-litre diesel engine will join the line-up in July.

The GTD won’t be as fast as the GTI, hitting 62mph in 8.1 seconds, but it should average a whopping 53.3mpg on average. That’s enough for 645 miles on a single tank of fuel, while CO2 emissions are pegged at 139g/km.

Alternatively, you might want to wait for the scorching GTI-R that we’ll see before the end of the year. A replacement for the old R32, it will feature four-wheel drive and a more powerful version of the GTI’s 2.0-litre turbo engine.
