The Volkswagen Golf R Cabriolet is to be released in spring 2013, when it will become the fastest VW convertible yet.
The Golf R Cabriolet will be front-wheel-drive only, and will most likely offer the same engine as the Scirocco R. This means it will come with a 2.0-litre TSI petrol engine that develops 261bhp and gets to 62mph in around six seconds. It is expected to come with a DSG semi-automatic and a six-speed manual gearbox, and would have a limited top speed of 155mph.
Pricing is not yet confirmed, but it will sit at the top of the Golf range, and is likely to cost around £6000 more than the next most powerful Golf Cabriolet – the GTI. This means it will cost around £35,000.
Volkswagen expects that the Golf R Cabriolet will be available in limited numbers only in the UK, and it will go on sale in April 2013. It will offer similar visual additions to the R hatchback, such as sports seats, carbonfibre trim and R badging.
