Volkswagen is upstaging the French manufacturers at their home show by giving the new Golf its first public airing.

A full range of three- and five-door models is on display, including the GTI and the high-economy BlueMotion.

The Golf Mk 6 goes on sale in the UK at the end of the year, with prices likely to start at around £13,000.

It's based on the platform of the outgoing car, while its conservative styling was influenced by the 1974 original as well as the Mk 4.

You'll be able to choose from six engines initially – two 2.0-litre turbodiesels, both more refined than those previously available, plus 1.4- and 1.6-litre petrol units.

One of the 1.4s is turbocharged while another has both a turbo and a supercharger.

There's the option of adaptive damping like that on the Passat CC and Scirocco, a self-parking system, collision-avoiding cruise control and a rear parking camera. Seven airbags are standard.

The BlueMotion, due some time next year, will be the highest-economy, lowest-CO2 fossil-fuel small hatch on sale in the UK.

With a new 1.6-litre diesel engine, high ratios in its five-speed gearbox, aerodynamic changes and low-friction tyres, it is capable of 74.3mpg while emitting just 99g/km of CO2.
