Volkswagen will launch this Passat Alltrack at the Tokyo motor show next week.
Based on the Passat Estate, the off-road Alltrack will provide VW with a rival for the likes of Audi's A4 Allroad and Volvo's XC70.
The Alltrack's ground clearance is 30mm higher than the standard car's, and the area underneath the front and rear bumpers are sculpted to deal with steep approach and departure angles.
For the UK, the Passat Alltrack will be offered with a choice of two 2.0-litre diesel engines with either 138bhp or 168bhp. Both come with Volkswagen's 4Motion four-wheel-drive system.
The lower-powered TDI comes with a six-speed manual box, while the higher-powered version is mated to a six-speed twin-clutch DSG 'box.
All versions come with an Alcantara interior, climate and cruise controls, multi-function steering wheel, Bluetooth, sat-nav and 18-inch alloys.
Prices will be revealed soon and order books open in April, with deliveries expected by late summer.
