Volvo S80 and V70 buyers will have two new engine options from early 2008.
A 2.0-litre petrol and 2.0-litre turbodiesel are being introduced to offer buyers the option of engines with better fuel economy and lower carbon dioxide emissions than the cars' larger motors.
The 142bhp 2.0-litre petrol engine manages an average of 34mpg in the V70 and 34.9mpg in the S80.
The 133bhp 2.0-litre turbodiesel is capable of an average of 47.1mpg in the V70 and 47.9mpg in the S80.
No carbon dioxide emission data has been released for either engine.
Prices will be announced later this year.
