Volvo will launch the XC60 4x4 in early in 2009 to challenge the Land Rover Freelander.
Based very closely on this concept car which will be unveiled at the Detroit motor show in January, the XC60 slots underneath the XC90 and into the busy compact 4x4 market.
It's likely to cost from around £22,000, so will hit the likes of the new Land Rover Freelander and Honda CR-V head-on, and undercut premium rivals including the BMW X3.
Production versions of the car will be a little milder in appearance than this concept car, but the vast majority of what you see here will be found in showrooms.
It's the work of Volvo's new design chief Steve Mattin, who said the XC60 shows what other cars from the manufacturer will look like in the future.
The look of the XC60 is all-new, but features are traditional Volvo through and though. A City Safety system can, for instance, automatically brake the car from speeds of up to 20mph if a collision is detected.
