Volvo has developed a new safety system that monitors whether a driver is tired or distracted.

The device, called a Seeing Machine, uses a camera that tracks head and eye movements as well as facial expressions.

If it detects the driver's eyes closing or moving away from the road ahead, it will sound a warning.

The system could be used in production cars within three years.

Several manufacturers are using or developing similar systems, including Mercedes, Saab and Nissan.
