The Volvo V50 D5 Sport has been named as 2007's Towcar of the Year by the Caravan Club.
In all, 42 cars were assessed on handling, stability, acceleration, braking and the cars' attitude when hitched. The cars were also judged on 'caravanability', which includes their ability to accommodate large and bulky loads such as water carriers and awning bags, as well as the ease of access to electricity sockets.
The Volvo took the honours thanks to 'crisp acceleration from a willing diesel engine, a smooth-shifting automatic transmission, confident brakes and fantastic stability'. The judges were also impressed by the V50's low operating costs and cavernous load-carrying space.
Kia and Subaru were also celebrating at the awards ceremony, held at the Royal Automobile Club in London on September 26. Both manufacturers each achieved two class wins.
The Subaru Impreza WRX 2.5 took the honours in both the £20,001-£25,000 category and the All-Wheel Drive Car Under 1800kg category. Kia, meanwhile, was victorious in the Under £13,500 category with the Rio 1.5 CRDi, while the Sorento 2.5 CRDi XE manual won the All-Wheel Drive Over 1800kg class.
