The new Volkswagen Jetta saloon will cost £425 more than the Golf hatchback when it goes on sale in the UK next February.
The cheapest model in the range is the 114bhp, 1.6-litre version in S trim at £14,635, while prices top out at £19,990 for a 197bhp 2.0-litre model with the DSG transmission.
Entry-level S versions receive more equipment than the Golf, including alloy wheels, automatic rain-sensing wipers and front and rear electric windows. Six airbags, air-conditioning and a CD player are also fitted to every model in the range.
SE models cost £990 more and add treats such as cruise control, upgraded upholstery and stereo, alarm, and automatic headlights. Sport cars cost from £17,315 for a 148bhp 2.0-litre petrol model – £690 more than the equivalent SE models.
Besides sportier suspension, these models also have figure-hugging front seats and larger alloy wheels.
In all, five engines are available – the 114bhp, 1.6-litre petrol unit, and the 2.0-litre engine producing 148bhp or 197bhp. Diesel buyers have 104bhp 1.9- or 138bhp 2.0-litre engines to choose from.
Originally, Volkswagen did not intend producing an estate version of the Jetta, hoping the Golf Plus would take this model's place in its range. VW has changed its mind, however, and will now launch an estate version of the Jetta about a year after the saloon. Expect to pay approximately £1000 more for the estate.
