Volkswagen's Golf Bluemotion is its greenest Golf yet – it's capable of 74.3mpg on average and it emits just 99g/km of CO2.

Powered by the standard Golf's 106bhp 1.6-litre common-rail diesel engine, the Bluemotion version gets an engine stop-start system, regenerative braking, longer gear ratios and low-friction tyres. There's also a gearshift indicator to help achieve maximum economy.

Green with envy
The Golf Bluemotion's green credentials are enhanced by a sports styling kit to help cut drag and improve aerodynamics, while also giving the car a stylish makeover.

The bodykit adds sports bumpers, sideskirts, a bigger rear roof spoiler and 15-inch alloys. There are also chrome grille louvres and Bluemotion badges at the front and rear.

Weight-saving measures have also been employed to boost efficiency, with the spare tyre replaced by a tyre repair kit.

How much?
The new Golf Bluemotion costs £17,325 with a £585 premium for the five-door model.

The purchase price is £785 more than the standard 106bhp 1.6 TDI Golf S, but Volkswagen says a driver covering 10,000 miles a year will save over £120 a year in fuel savings alone.
