Volkswagen will call its new compact 4x4 the Tiguan.
The name was developed by Volkswagen, along with the alternatives Nanuk, Namib, Rockton and Samun, and voted on by 350,000 people from across 10 countries.
The new off-roader will be launched in 2008, and VW hopes it will follow the success of its larger 4x4, the Touareg.
VW says the Golf-based Tiguan has been designed to be as much at home in urban environments as in the wilds of the countryside, with an emphasis on driving dynamics and comfort.
A hint of the Tiguan's styling was given in the Concept A design study shown at the start of the year.
