Volkswagen has promised to match the price of any service or repair job from independent garages.

The offer means that VW dealers will undertake any service, maintenance or repair work for the same price as an independent garage within a five-mile radius.

The only conditions are that it has to be a like-for-like job, that the quote is provided in writing and that the independent garage uses Volkswagen original parts.

It's an attempt to claw back work for VW garages, because owners perceive dealer servicing to be much too expensive, with independent specialists often doing the same work for considerably less money.

The offer is open until the end of the year.
