The Volkswagen Scirocco is back.

Thirteen years after the last model went out of production, VW has unveiled a near-finished concept for a new affordable four-seater coupe.

The concept is named Iroc, which just happens to be the middle four letters of Scirocco.

Volkswagen boss Wolfgang Bernhard said: 'We'll decide in the next couple of months whether to build it, but if we do it will be on the street in 2008.

'The only way we would not do it is if the public gives it a thumbs down after it is shown at Paris. If it comes to life it will be called Scirocco.'

Lending weight to the production possibilities is VW’s claims for possible engine choices. The concept has a 210bhp version of the Golf’s turbocharged and supercharged (TSI) four-cylinder petrol engine.
VW also says ‘a range of TSIs, starting from under 150bhp, is also feasible’.

Iroc is based on Golf mechanicals but has a slightly longer wheelbase. It follows the Volvo C30 is offering four-seater accommodation with good luggage space inside a squat, broad-hipped, fastback body that has a more upright rear than a conventional coupe.

The front-end look shows how VW plans to give individual models their own unique styling tweaks in future.

Inside, the dash is dominated by two recessed instruments with light blue backlighting, and a row of retro-looking toggle switches. The gearlever lies flush with the console until the engine is started, as an anti-theft measure, while the seats are race-car-style buckets with five-point belts.
