Volkswagen's Tiguan 4x4 will cost from £19,370 when it goes on sale in early January.
The car is available with 138bhp 2.0-litre diesel and 148bhp 1.4-litre engines. A 167bhp diesel engine and two more petrol units will be available in late 2008.
The car will be available in four trim levels: S, SE, Sport and Escape.
The S, SE and Sport trims are built with an on-road bias, while the Escape has a different front-end to allow it to tackle steeper slopes off-road.
Standard equipment includes alloy wheels, air-conditioning, stability control and head, curtain and side airbags.
